Turner Field Tour

I really enjoyed the Turner field tour givien by our guide Dave. I didnt know much about about the facility nor about baseball and I feel with this tour I learned a lot about each. One thing I really found to be very interesting was the fact that before each game they sell $1 seats and tickets. I found this to be very interesting because it gives everyone an opportunity to view a game at this facility, this is something that I have never heard of and I think every facility should try to and do things like this to really give those who may not be able to afford a ticket to see a game the opportunity to. Being able to view the fan area was very fun because it is important to be able to really entertain and give the fans something to enjoy. I never knew that the braves were the oldest oranized team, so that fact was very interesting. I enjoyed being able to view the museum and walk on the train to get the experience of traveling for athletes back in those times. All and all this was a very wonderful and memorable experience.

Georgia Tech/ Georgia Dome Visits

I enjoyed being able to go and tour these two places because it gave me a great chance to experience different types of ways I could possibly use my degree. I really enjoyed being able to see different areas and learn about all the things it takes to keep those places up and running, and how important it is to have these types of places for not only athletics but other events and things as well. I really loved being able to see how things operate as far as tickets and the way the dome is ran as well as a facility like the recreation center at Ga Tech. It was really interesting to learn everything I did about these facilities and be able to walk around and look and get a feel for what takes place besides being a spectator.I had a wonderful time on these tours and would definently love to be able to experince something like this again or maybe even try to see if I could possibly intern for one of these facilities. This was an amazing experience.

Guest Speaker Dr. Bob Pearson

I really enjoyed this speaker and all the things that he spoke about and gave insight on. Some things that stuck out to me were a few quotes and ideas that I feel will help me in my career; 10/90 principle, it states that 10% of the people will take 90% of your time and this is to me a very true statement in the sports worl, "some of the greatest practices in any sport occur when practice is cancelled" I agree with this simply because it is good to be able to take time off to relax and collect yourself, "enjoyment, pure and simple, should be experienced in sport, on the job and in your everyday life" I agree with this quote because I want to enjoy the work that I am doing and make it a great expereince everyday, another one that stuck out to me was "Never forget to be humble-egos get in the way of success" I agree with this because when you get to where you want to be you never want to forget what it took to get there and the things you had to go through to make it. I really enjoyed this speaker because he gave great advice and great knowledge for us to make it where we want to go.

Guest Speaker Coach Bill Popp

I learned a lot from this speaker in regards to what he does as and Athletic Director as well as a head coach. He is responsible for a lot of things within the athletic department such as eligibility, athletci budgeting for each team,as well as handeling scholarship and financial reports. He informed us about the NCAA and NAIA's differences and how things work with those organizations. It was really interesting to be able to hear about all the duties that he has and how he got to where he is, as well as the things he accomplished. He also provided great information regarding things that we all needed to know about when dealing with the administrative side of sports.

GAE 1-5

The graduate assistantship assignment was a very fun experience for me, it gave me a different idea of things that I could do once I graduate with my undergraduate degree. It really opened my eyes to a different at somethings that could get me on the path to a great career.
1) University of Florida ( Intramural Sports Grad Assistantship)
The Department of Recreational Sports awards graduate assistantships in Athletic Training, Group Fitness, Strength & Conditioning, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Marketing/Public Relations, Outdoor Recreation and Facilities. Current openings and information regarding the application process can be found below.I find this opportunity interesting because this assistantship is something I have thought about getting into and trying out.
2) University of Miami ( Sports Admin. Gradute Program)
The sports industry has been expanding rapidly, both in spectators and participants. As the industry grows, the need for administrators with specialized training becomes more complex and important. Sport Administration is an attractive field for young professionals. A degree in Sport Administration is widely recognized by industry professionals and gives graduates an important advantage when seeking employment. The University of Miami program in Sport Administration prepares individuals for a career in this field according to their personal and professional goals. I found this graduate program interesting because of the location and the job opportunities available after the program is completed. This program has a lot of different fields I could see myself enjoying as a career.
3) Seattle University ( Sports Information Graduate Asst.)
These “hands-on” positions in the Seattle University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics encourage leadership, develop communication and managerial skills, and establish an important professional network. I felt like this was a different aspect of the sports admin side to really help out with networking.
4) Belmont University (Graduate Teaching Assistanship)
The Master of Sport Administration program at Belmont University has established relationships with many sport organizations in the Nashville area to provide experiential learning opportunities for our students. The internship requirement can be fulfilled across multiple semesters allowing for a variety of experiences within the sport industry. A summer internship in sports administration where I will bring hard work, commitment, and excellence developed through athletics.

YMCA Visit (Nicole Lawson)

I enjoyed visiting the YMCA and being able to learn about the start of the organization and how it helps out the communities in which they are located. I especially liked the fact that they give out scholarships for people who may be going through rough times, it shows that the organization is greatly concerned and involved with the community and not just out to make money. I enjoyed hearing about all the different programs that they have for the youth as well as adults. One thing I found interesting was the hall of fame wall, it showed the accomplishments of members in a different aspect outside of the norm of college and high school type organizations. I especially liked the fact that there is an electronic way to really monitor people's workouts and how they should go about accomplishing their fitness goal, the system does not let the person cut corners or slack off and I found that to be a very helpful tool. I liked the fact that the youth sports are sort of non competative because at a certain age I feel they should just be able to enjoy the sport that they are participating in. I was glad to know about the internship opportunities because having experience with an organization such as the YMCA would to me be a plus for an employer. I was glad to have this experience and learn more about this organization.

Guest Speaker Coach Mitchell Head women's bbal coach and Associate AD

I enjoyed this speaker because I learned a lot about the administrative part of going into the sports field and how important it is to have a strong foundation when dealing with collegiate sports. Things were discussed as far as the academic side as well which I felt was very important to know about. A quote he stated stuck out to me the most and it was "if you want to get into coaching get involved in something" and I agree because it is hard to just jump right into coaching I agree that a person should really be under someone and learn all they can before they simply take that leap. I liked the talk about coaches doing program plans to really map out what it is that they want to do and how they feel they can accomplish it. In all I took a lot of knowledge from this speaker and the things he discussed I feel helped me to get a different view of the sports world.

Guest Speaker ( Peggy Collins Feerehy)

Our the current Director of Career Services and, I really enjoyed the things she talked about. She gave great insight on her experiences with students trying to find employment. Some main points that I recalled were things such as the two types of resume's: chronological which is the highest accepted one at 80%, and a functional resume. She spoke about the importance of being appropriately dressed for a career fair and or job fair. I really found it helpful when she discussed the elevator speech which is something that will catch an employers attention when you discuss your stengths and the things that make you unique and want employers to hire you. I also learned the importance of haveing professional references as well and making sure that the people you use as references. I really enjoyed this speaker because it helped me to really understand the importance of the things she discussed and I plan to really use the information I attained to the best of my abilities when searching for the right job and how to go about getting that job.
